1. Do you offer roof sky lights?
We don't offer sky lights for a number of reasons. Firstly, the transition from canvas to PVC requires a substantial seam. Whilst this isn't a problem on a vertical surface, say a side wall with a window, it presents a significant issue on a roof panel. The seam will invariably cause water to pool, which in the long run will result in water seeping through. Secondly, canvas and PVC respond differently to direct UV exposure, causing stress along the seam eventually. Moreover prolonged UV exposure of a PVC roof panel will make said panel brittle and lead to a leaking roof and expensive repairs in the long run. Thirdly, one key function of the roof is to provide shade for the tent underneath. A PVC roof window eliminates that benefit. Fourthly, you won't see the stars clearly through a PVC window anyway. Try it out, grab a piece of PVC and look though it into the night sky. With decades of experience in making some of the best roof tents in the world, at Gordigear we consider sky lights an unnecessary gimmick at best and a potentially trip-ruining design flaw at worst. We have lost business in the past because customers asked us to custom-build such a feature for them and we plain simply refuse to do so. We would rather lose money than sell something we believe is counterproductive to the customer's camping experience.
2. Is my car suitable for a Gordigear roof tent?
A Gordigear roof tent can be put on pretty much any car, regardless of make and model. It is more a question of whether or not the roof racks/bars are suitable (see next question). It is not required to have a 4WD vehicle. Just check that the roof load rating of your vehicle is sufficient (with most cars this is not an issue). We have successfully fitted our tents onto all kinds of sedans, utility vehicles and station wagons. We are yet to try installing one onto a convertible.
3. Which roof racks/bars are compatible with your tents?
All Gordigear roof tents come with a flexible mounting system that adjusts to the distance of your roof racks and gives you the choice of direction you would like the tent to open to. The actual connection between the tent and roof racks is made by sliding mounting plates and bolts. The standard bolts provided cover roof racks of up to 5cm thickness. In case your roof racks exceed this thickness the bolts can be exchanged by standard M8 heavy duty stainless steel bolts with the necessary length to match your roof rack. The mounting plates fit onto racks with a width of up to 6.5cm, but wider ones are readily available if required. Please take into consideration that this is a sturdy product, so please check the static and dynamic load capacity of your roof rack specifications before mounting the tent.
4. What is the minimum/maximum car height required?
All our roof tents include height-adjustable ladders, which accommodate installation heights of up to 2.00m. Ladder extensions are available to increase the maximum ladder height. There is no minimum height, our tents have even been fitted onto trailers on numerous occasions.
5. Are Tanami and Daintree product lines compatible?
Both product lines are not compatible, for instance an annex of one model cannot be used with the other. We make separate accessories and spare parts for both product lines.
6. What are the differences between the Tanami Base and the Tanami Plus roof tents?
There are two main differences between the two models. The Tanami Plus roof tent features a roofed-over entrance, which needs to be pegged down with two guy ropes in windy conditions (unless an Tanami Plus Annex is attached to the tent) to prevent the entrance cover from flapping. The Tanami Base doesn't require pegging down. Also, the add-on Gordigear roof tent annex is available in different versions to match your roof tent. Apart from that, both tents are made from the same material and provide exactly the same mattress space.
7. What directions can the entrance face?
Gordigear roof tents can be mounted to face either side or the back of your car. Of course wider models can only be installed side-opening. Our installation system is quite flexible, so the mounting direction can be changed later on if required.
8. How long does it take to fold/unfold the tent?
If you are really in a hurry and with a little bit of practice, the basic setup takes only one to two minutes. Add a moment or two if you want to span the window flaps for a full setup. Folding the tent together takes no more than three minutes.
9. How should I set the tent up in different environmental conditions?
In stormy conditions it is advised to find a location with less exposure. Always park into the wind to minimise the amount of tent area that is exposed. Also, don't forget to be mindful of trees in such conditions. Just in case a branch falls. There are two things to consider when using the tent in colder climates. Always leave a small proportion of the window flaps open to ensure air flow and to counter condensation. Moreover, it is important that the fly sheet provided with the tent is set up as it establishes an insulating air layer, which helps to keep you warm. During hot days and nights, the large window and entrance openings ensure excellent airflow. The fly sheet also plays an important role by creating shade and an insulating air pocket above the tent.
10. What to do with my tent in between trips?
If you are not using your tent, it is advised to remove it from the vehicle. A common approach is to hoist the tent into the ceiling of your garage, carport or shed. It requires the fitting of a harness, but it will make re-installation of the tent a lot easier, too. Another way is to simply lift the tent of manually, which will require at least two persons. Always ensure that the tent is dry if it is stored for longer periods.
