maintenance
As with all tents, it is recommended that you thoroughly wet the tent fabric before using it for the first time and then let it dry. Repeat this process up to three times to seal the material. Whether the tent fabric needs to be sealed at regular intervals depends mainly on how often you use your tent. We have customers who have used their Gordigear tent every day for months and the tent is still as waterproof as it was on the first day. However, if you use it frequently, it is advisable to seal the tent occasionally. Please contact a camping shop you trust to obtain high-quality products, or rub a block of beeswax over the seams to freshen up the seam protection.
To clean the tent fabric, it is best to wash it with cold water and brush it if necessary. Chemicals, soap and detergents should be avoided. Apply silicone spray to all zippers from time to time to increase their life expectancy.
The tent can be packed up when wet and opened again after several hours. If you do this, please ensure that the tent dries completely before packing it away, especially if you are not going to use the tent for a long time. Although our material is mold resistant, mold can still form if the tent is left wet for a long period of time.
repair
Smaller cracks are easy to repair and should be closed before they get bigger. Simply clean the area around the crack, let it dry and then apply a generous amount of matching fabric tape to both sides. Then smooth the fabric tape down, coat it with seam sealant and wait for the sealant to dry.
Larger tears or holes must be sewn, which means you will need an awl and wax thread. First, the affected area should be cleaned and dry. Then cut two patches of tent fabric of the same size, which should be about 5cm larger than the area to be repaired. Tents are usually under a certain amount of tension, so it pays not to cut the patches too tightly. Before you start sewing, you need to consider how water will drain. Do not create channels in which water can collect - this would result in a leaky tent in the long term. Now apply seam sealant to one side of each of the two patches of fabric and use them to close the tear from the inside and outside. The two patches should be placed as evenly as possible and any folds should be smoothed out. Then sew around the edge of the patch in a close-meshed zigzag pattern and seal the outline inside and out with seam sealant. All other seams should also be treated with seam sealant.
Leaks around seams can be stopped or prevented by applying seam sealant. The seam should of course be clean and dry beforehand. Afterwards, sufficient time should be allowed for drying. The process is repeated until the area is sealed.
To replace eyelets, you will need a special eyelet punch. To repair damaged eyelets or tears around eyelets, you should first cut out the eyelet, taking care to remove as little fabric as possible. The resulting hole is then closed according to the instructions above. Finally, a new eyelet is inserted using the punch and seam sealant is applied around the edge of the eyelet.
Most of the time, the above problems occur when the product is assembled or disassembled with excessive force. All of our products can be assembled or disassembled very easily and with minimal force. If it still doesn't work as expected, just ask us, we'll be happy to help. In general, it's advisable to have a repair kit with you, which should at least contain seam sealant, patches made from tent fabric, an awl and wax thread.
If you do not feel confident enough to carry out the repair yourself, please consult a specialist.
