Frequently asked questions

Do you offer roof windows?

There are several reasons for this. Basically, it is important to know that PVC does not tolerate long-term UV radiation, which ultimately leads to clouding and material fatigue. The transition from PVC to canvas also requires a very thick seam. Rainwater will inevitably collect at this unnecessary point of attack and weaken the durability of the seam in the long term. This premature wear is supported by the different material properties and aging processes of PVC and canvas, which in turn leads to tension at the seam. A leaky tent is often the result. A very important and often overlooked point is that a PVC opening in the tropical roof negates its function of shading and cooling the sleeping area. With our decades of experience in tent construction, we at Gordigear still consider roof windows to be an unnecessary and, above all, unpredictable weak point in the most unsuitable place imaginable. The risk of having to cancel a dream vacation, an expedition or a trip around the world because of a broken roof window is out of proportion to the supposed advantages, because unfortunately you will only be able to see the stars through a PVC film anyway.

Is my car suitable for a Gordigear roof tent?

Gordigear roof tents can be mounted on pretty much any car. It depends much more on whether your roof rack is suitable for it (see next question). Of course, you should make sure that the permissible roof load of your car is not exceeded. We have already successfully installed tents on sedans, commercial vehicles and station wagons. The only thing we have not tried so far is convertibles.

Which roof racks are suitable?

All of our roof tents are equipped with a flexible fastening system that can be adjusted to the distance between your luggage rack rails and gives you the choice of opening the tent either to the side or to the back. The actual connection between the tent and the roof rack is made by sliding fastening plates with stainless steel screws. These are standardized M8 screws that are suitable for luggage rack rails up to a height of 5cm. If your rack exceeds this thickness, suitable longer screws are available in any hardware store. The fastening plates are suitable for luggage rack widths of up to 6.5cm (wider plates are also available). Please check the static and dynamic maximum load in your roof rack description before installing the tent.

Are there minimum or maximum car heights to be observed?

Gordigear roof tents have height-adjustable ladders that reach up to 2.00m and can be extended as required using optional extension elements. There are no minimum heights to be observed; our roof tents can even be mounted on car trailers.

Are Tanami and Daintree product lines compatible?

Both product lines are not compatible, for example the awning of one model cannot be used with the other model. We produce separate accessories and spare parts for both product lines.

What is the difference between Tanami Base and Tanami Plus?

The two versions differ mainly in two ways. The Tanami Plus has a covered entrance area that is secured with two guy ropes (the canopy does not need to be guyed when the Tanami Plus awning is used). The Tanami Base, on the other hand, does not need to be guyed under any circumstances. In addition, different awnings are available for the two versions. Apart from these two different features, both tents are identical in construction and also offer the same sleeping area.

In which direction can the tent entrance be mounted?

Our roof tents can be installed so that the entrance is on the side or above the rear. Of course, wider models can only be installed with the entrance on the side. The Gordigear fastening system is very flexible, so that the orientation of your tent can be changed later.

How long does it take to set up and fold up the tent?

If you're in a hurry and have some practice, the tent can be up and running in a minute or two. Spend a few more moments putting up the window covering and the tent is completely set up. Folding it up takes less than three minutes.

What needs to be taken into account under certain weather conditions?

In stormy conditions, it is best to find a spot that is sheltered from the wind and park in the direction of the wind to minimize the area exposed to the tent. Please remember that branches can fall if you park under a tree. Two measures have proven effective in counteracting low temperatures. Leave the windows slightly open to improve air circulation and prevent condensation. The flysheet should also be put up as it creates an insulating air cushion that provides additional warmth. In tropical latitudes, the generously sized windows and entrances provide sufficient cooling anyway. The flysheet plays an important role here too, as it provides shade and cools the tent at the same time.

What do I do with my tent between trips?

If the roof tent is not going to be used for a longer period of time, it should be removed from the vehicle. The tent is often pulled under the garage roof using a cable winch and anchored there. This requires a suitable device, but makes setting up and taking down much easier. Of course, the tent can also simply be lifted onto or off the car manually, although this requires at least two people. Please make sure that the tent is dry when it is stored.

How should I care for my Gordigear tent?

For details, see the user manual or the Maintenance section in the service menu at the top of the page.

Does the tent fabric need to be sealed at regular intervals?

Can the tent be packed up when wet?

Will the poles fit under the travel cover?

All items needed to set up the tent (poles, guy ropes, pegs...) can be stored under the travel cover.

Can bedding or sleeping bags remain in the packed tent?

There is enough space for bedding and sleeping bags in the packed tent.

Does Gordigear ship internationally?

Of course. A large proportion of our business is cross-border and we supply our entire product range to a global customer base. We have numerous intermediate warehouses on different continents and delivery times depend on the destination and the selected shipping method.

How long does it take for international orders to arrive?

The answer to this question depends mainly on the shipping method selected (air freight, sea freight, courier) and the location of the warehouse that ships your order. To find out more about delivery times, please contact us.

Real Opinions

Experiences that convince

Gerald M., Australia

"What can I say about the Gordigear roof tent... it's over eight years old and I bought it second hand in Sydney; the only words that come to mind are exceptional, well made and perfect. We used it for three weeks in the Simpson Desert, three weeks in South Australia and on the Googs Track, as well as numerous other weekend trips off road - some of them very strenuous - and it worked flawlessly."

Kenny G., USA

"I love the tent. I watched a lot of videos and did a lot of research before choosing your product."

Alexander Z., Australia

"I've just returned from a four week/12500km trip through Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia, and I'm happy to report that my tent held up pretty well. The trip included about 3500km of dirt roads."

Beat O., Australia

"We have enjoyed seeing most parts of Australia, first in a Gordigear roof tent and then in a Gordigear Savannah trailer tent. I am very grateful for your excellent service and the overall quality of Gordigear products. I have seen dozens of different roof tents and trailer tents and I think Gordigear's are simply the best."

Michel VB, Germany

"It was a great week with the Savannah in August 2019 and we had everything from storms, thunderstorms, rain and sun. The tent was always bulletproof and everything inside was super dry. We felt very safe and comfortable in the Savannah. We are very satisfied with the service and products from Gordigear."

Kristinn Þeyr M., Iceland

"Greetings from Iceland. The tent was fantastic."

Julie T., Australia

"Our Gordigear tent was AMAZING! We travelled through South Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland for 10 weeks before heading back to Tassie. We had cold, hot, windy, rainy, humid, dry... you name it, we had it! And our Gordigear material was unbeatable! On the Oodnadatta Track we had winds of nearly 100km/h for a few days, dust storms like I've never experienced and our little tent didn't even have a tear! We've seen many other roof top tents with damage but not us! Thank you for making such good gear, it made our trip fabulous.

John-Patrick Q., United Kingdom

"I love the entire setup and the tent is fantastic to sleep in with a very comfortable mattress."
